South Island Place, Hong Kong

South Island Place BEAMs with Flowcrete Hong Kong Flooring

Starting life as a bus depot, South Island Place is now a three-storey basement car park, providing parking spaces for a grade-A office building in the Wong Chuk Hang area.

With this region emerging as an upscale residential and commercial area, spurred on by the opening of the MTR station in late 2016, the client required an updated car park deck coating system for South Island Place. After utilising Flowcrete Hong Kong’s Deckshield range in another successful project, the client decided to use the range once more.

To concur with the Provisional Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) Gold Rating Award that South Island Place has obtained, the Green Label certified, low VOC and solvent free coating systems Deckshield ID and Deckshield EP were chosen for the 5,000 m2 basement area. The BEAM standard strives to reduce the environmental impact of new buildings whilst maintaining quality and user satisfaction.

Aside from being environmentally friendly, moisture tolerance is a benefit of both systems, meaning that the car park coatings could withstand high moisture levels inherent in basement car park levels.

Similarly, fire resistance, slip resistance and durability were necessary properties due to the amount of combustible gasses and oils intrinsic to car park facilities, as well as the daily wear and tear of moving vehicles and high footfall.

Whilst Deckshield ID and Deckshield EP also provide slip resistance, 1,000 m2 of Deckshield IDSD High Grade with bauxite aggregates was also utilised on the ramps to further increase the level of slip resistance and enhance the safety of the car park.

The installation was completed within the three-month time slot set by the client, and the cosmetically enhanced car park re-opened fully.
