Royal Malaysian Navy Helicopter Hangar
The Kota Kinabalu Royal Malaysian Navy Base was developed beginning in May 2001 and was completed in April 2006. Officially commencing operations on 2 June 2006, it is the second-largest base of the Royal Malaysian Navy. The base plays a vital role in enhancing the nation’s maritime security and defense capabilities. The Royal Malaysian Navy (known as TLDM in Malay) initially applied a standard epoxy coating to the hangar flooring, which was relatively thin, with a thickness of only 200 to 300 microns. Over time, the flooring started to peel and the color faded due to UV exposure. The owner chose to carry out repairs and invest in a more durable flooring solution. Flowcrete Asia was selected for the project due to our extensive experience in resin flooring and a strong track record of successful projects.
Flowtex PT, topped with Flowcoat SK, was applied to the hanger flooring. Flowcoat SK is a solvent-free, high-build epoxy resin-based coating, offering excellent resistance to hydraulic fluids and Skydrol®. It is commonly used in areas such as aircraft hangars, aircraft parking zones, and workshops.
Lastly, Deckshield UV was applied to meet the demands of the tropical climate with strong sunlight, as UV protection is essential to prevent discoloration, a key issue with the old flooring. This coating system is also resistant to chemicals such as engine oil, battery acid, hydraulic fluids, and fuel, which are common in hangars.
