Flowcrete Asia has been chosen by Macau’s government as the flooring supplier for a large-scale project to refurbish public car parks damaged by 2018’s super typhoon.

30 sites across the island will be upgraded, with the work being divided into multiple phases of five to six car parks each. Flowcrete Asia’s specialist Deckshield range has been specified for the first three phases, which consists of 16 separate car parks.

The project’s decision makers picked Flowcrete Asia, as the resin flooring manufacturer proved the quality of its products by installing a mock up onsite that fully satisfied all of the government officers’ functional, aesthetic and budgetary requirements. The fact that Flowcrete Asia could point to a long list of highly successful multi-storey car park floors throughout Macau, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia also impressed the project’s specifiers.

Francis Tang, General Manager of Flowcrete Hong Kong, said: “We’re very proud that Flowcrete Asia was selected to provide the floors for this important refurbishment project. The super typhoon last year was a tragic event that caused a lot of damage to key aspects of Macau’s infrastructure.

“While often overlooked, car parks form an important part of a major cities transport and logistics network. The Macau government recognised that it needed to repair its public car parking facilities and do so in a way that would protect them from floods in the future. Our Deckshield range was the perfect solution for this challenge, as it has been specially designed to maintain a functional finish for the long term.”

Throughout the three phases, 151,300 m2 of Deckshield flooring materials will be supplied. This will cover a number of different sized projects, ranging from the 18,000 m2 Garden of Commander Ho Yin Park car park to the 6,000 m2 Auto-Silo de Edificio Mong Sin site.

Three car park refurbishments that have already been finalised include the Macau Melaka Public, the Auto-Silo-da Rua de Tranquilidada and the Auto-Silo Da Rua Do Almirante Sergio facilities. All of these utilised the Green Label certified, hard wearing and flexible polyurethane deck coating system Deckshield ID as well as the solvent free and low-VOC primer Deckshield EP.

This build up is ideal for creating a colourful, safe and high performance surface that will be able to withstand onsite conditions for an extended period of time.

Bright white line marking was chosen for each project to mark out the bays and to make sure that the navigational and safety signage is clearly visible against the dark grey floor. Colour played an especially prominent role in the Auto-Silo-da Rua de Tranquilidada car park, with bright blue used to mark out the disabled parking bays.

Car parks often get badly damaged by natural disasters such as typhoons, as these facilities frequently have underground ground levels and so suffer significantly from flooding. The government officers were particularly keen to ensure that the new floors would be waterproof, to minimise flood damage in the future. Deckshield’s impervious, water tight nature was therefore an important factor in its specification.

In addition, busy parking facilities will subject the floor to a number of challenges, such as heavy vehicles, constant traffic movement, impacts, automotive oils, battery acid, frequent cleaning and more.

The Deckshield collection includes a variety of systems to ensure that each part of a car park’s floor area has a high performance, fit-for-purpose finish. The Macau government’s decision makers were particularly impressed by the fact that each and every car park flooring concern could be solved using this one flooring range.

For example, certain parts of a car park will face specific demands, such as ramps and tight turning circles where a lot of pressure is put through the tyres and into the floor coating. The durability and abrasion resistance of Flowcrete Asia’s Deckshield ID system means that it will be able to survive such conditions for an extended period of time.

Another key concern for these projects was that the fact that many underground car parks experience a lot of rising moisture, which can cause coatings to quickly fail if they cannot cope with significant quantities of water vapour.

Flowcrete Asia’s specially formulated Deckshield LBD system avoids this problem, as it incorporates an advanced polyurethane based barrier that safely dissipates moisture vapour through the floor.
