Flowcrete on the Right Track at Hong Kong Velodrome
11 Mar 2016
Flowcrete Hong Kong has supplied 25,600m2 of high performance flooring solutions for the new Hong Kong Velodrome to ensure that its floor would maintain a clean, reliable and attractive finish – which would be especially crucial when the site would be facing global scrutiny during prestigious sporting events.
The floors across the facility would be subjected to constant traffic, wear and use, meaning that an exceptionally durable solution was required.
The entire flooring project took 15 months to complete and was finished in time for the velodrome’s packed schedule of sporting events, which has included the UCI Track Cycling World Cup.
Because of the prestigious nature of the competition, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) stipulated that the venue’s flooring must be of the highest possible standard. Therefore it was deemed that Flowcrete Hong Kong would be the perfect fit to provide world class flooring for the elite sporting venue.
Flowcrete Hong Kong supplied 10,000m2 of the high-build epoxy resin coating Flowcoat SF41 to ensure that the floor would maintain an effective and attractive appearance – which would be especially crucial during high-profile events while the eyes of the world are on it.
A 3mm, dark grey Flowcoat SF41 surface was applied across the spectators stand, the central basketball pitch and in the back of house areas. This floor finish was supported by 15,000m2 of Heavy Duty Isocrete K-Screed, which creates a high strength screed that can withstand substantial levels of traffic. Proprietary additives are incorporated within the screed material so that it has an early drying time, allowing for the flooring project to be completed faster than traditional screed systems would allow.
Extra care had to be taken when applying the Heavy Duty Isocrete K-Screed and Flowcoat SF41 in the stair areas to ensure that a uniform finish was achieved.
600m2 of the flexible polyurethane deck coating Deckshield ED was also applied on the roof level of the velodrome’s exposed car park deck.
The Hong Kong government agreed to build the Velodrome following Wong Kam-po’s gold medal victory in the men’s road race during the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, amid concerns that athletes who represent Hong Kong had to rely on training facilities in China.
Construction of the HK$1.1 billion venue got the legislative go-ahead in January 2010 and work began two months later. The Velodrome occupies a total landmass of 6.6 hectares and cycling helmets inspired the structure’s signature wavy rooftop design.
The remainder of the public sports centre is located on the ground floor, beneath the cycle track level, comprising a table tennis room, a dance room, a fitness room, activity rooms and a children's playroom.
Flowcrete Hong Kong was delighted to have worked with the 3,000 capacity sporting arena to ensure that its floor area would retain a surface befitting of the leading sports venue. This flooring project is the latest in Flowcrete’s proud history of working on high profile stadia and arena projects around the world such as Wembley Stadium, Soccer City Stadium and Perth Arena to name but a few.
